This school year we have many new and exciting changes. Our school theme for the year is "Stick with Kindness". We hope each of our students, faculty and staff feel welcomed and safe at our school. We also have monthly themes. In August we learned about being a Bucket Filler. These are people who are kind and treat others with respect. We want to encourage our students to be kind wherever they are. When students are kind and do nice things for others it not only fills other people's buckets, but it also fills their own. This is based on the book by Carol McCloud, "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?"
Each month we focus on a different theme. September- Perseverance- I can do it if I put my mind to it. October- Goals- The result of my hard work. November- Gratitude- Be aware and thankful for the good things that happen. December- Growth- The progress I have made. January- Friendship- You can count on me. February- Service- The actions I do to help someone. March- Honesty- Being truthful with myself and others. April- Resilience- Never giving up even when things get tough. May- Celebrations- I can reflect and celebrate the learning process. These themes also go along with our Social Emotional Learning program this year. There are four units in our Second Step program. They are: Unit 1- Growth Mindset and Goal Setting Unit 2- Emotion Management Unit 3- Empathy and Kindness Unit 4- Problem Solving We are planning on a great school year!

We have two weeks before school starts. Now is the time to start preparing your child to return to school. Our school district has released new instructions for the reopening of this school year. You can read the letter for parents here. A big change this year will be the wearing of Face Masks or Face Shields. As educators, we would rather have the children with us in person while teaching them. If we wear a mask, then this can happen. Here are some tips to help your child to wear a mask.
Most of us may be feeling overwhelmed having to change from our regular routine. This time can be very confusing with the closures of schools and many businesses. Please remember that we are in this TOGETHER. Find ways to reach out to others in creative ways while still following social distancing rules. Children are going to be missing their friends and regular routine. Be prepared for them to be mad, angry, and sad. Your job now will be to show empathy. When talking to your children about the virus, remember that younger children don't need very much information to be satisfied of the answer. Give them information appropriate for their developmental age. If you find yourself constantly watching the news and talking about it in an anxious way, this can lead to increased anxiety in your child. Set aside a time to watch and process the news. A great teaching moment you can do for your child at this time is to be a problem solver. Be flexible in life. Here's a way to help. During a time when your family is sitting down together, ask each other what was the unexpected thing that happened today and how did you handle it? Learning to be flexible in life helps your child be successful in dealing with changes. Lastly, remember to have fun. Your children are going to have great memories of the fun and crazy things you did during this time.
